User feedback

At last, the school has a systematic tool to consider students' perspectives when promoting well-being efforts and and dealing with mental health issues. Moreover, you don't need specialized expertise to use this resource; barely no threshold to get started. Students can access both theoretical knowledge and practical tips.

The whole concept is comprehensive and easy to follow. Moreover, it serves as an excellent topic for discussion. Our youth are surprised when they realize how much their daily lives are influenced by their phones/the internet. They also gain insights into how their well-being and school performance are affected when they don't get enough sleep.

The Learning Tool contains an easy-to-handle educational program and lesson plan for working with students on preventive well-being and knowledge-enhancing efforts. The students appreciate it, and as a leader, I find it easy to follow the structure. Additionally, the staff receives requested professional development.

FAQ

How to initiate the program at a school?

To get a school or grade level started with the material, we recommend watching our three short startup videos (English versions will be provided in october 2023). The program is designed for the video modules to be used during tutor time at school, where the tutor/educator facilitates discussions and exercises in the classroom. Short informational videos before each module are available to mentors as preparation. The Student Health team, which has in-depth knowledge of the topics covered in the material, and the tutors who will lead the classroom discussions, play key roles in implementing the preventive program. Since these are complex issues that require continuous work, it's important to think and plan for the long term based on the implementation of the program, even though the modules can also be used to inspire on occasional occasions.

Do the questions align with any specific subject based on the central content of the curriculum?

(Instructions for the Swedish curriculum only)
The Healthy Mind Platter-module and Shape Your Brain can be well-connected to the central content of Physical Education & Health as well as Biology (LGR 22: Health and Lifestyle and Body and Health; GY11: Biology 2, Organism Function, Psychology 1, 2a, and 2b). The module Take Control of Your Attention also fits nicely into Psychology at the high school level. The module Perform Without Anxiety also aligns with the central content for Physical Education and Health (LGR 22) in terms of "Tension Regulation and Mental Training".The module Shape Your Brain and the module Social Media & Gaming also contain elements from Social Studies (LGR 22: Social Studies Information and Communication, GY11: Social Studies 1a1, 1a2). For some modules, there are additional exercises that fit well into the aforementioned subjects, as well as Swedish, focusing on both reading and writing texts related to the modules. These exercises are available for free download in Learnworlds under the Lesson Material tab. If you are a teacher and want to contribute lesson plans related to these topics, please email us at info@artsandhearts.se, and we will make them available to everyone!

What ages is the material suitable for?

The material is designed for secondary and upper secondary schools. However, the choice of modules to be used depends on the educator's or tutor's judgment, taking into consideration the needs and maturity level of the student group. The modules Take Control of Your AttentionPerform Without Anxiety, and The Healthy Mind Platter work well for all ages, while Shape Your Brain as well as Social Media & Gaming are slightly more advanced.

Can the material be used on a school's theme day?

These can be effectively used as building blocks during a themed day, where discussions can be developed and explored based on different roles and responsibilities. The modules can also be used during parent meetings to involve families in these issues that concern the overall well-being and learning conditions of the students.

Is it possible to split the modules into two different occasions?

The initial session (1st lesson) of each module is specifically structured for a tutor session lasting approximately 45-60 minutes. Subsequent lessons within each module may require less time, depending on the students' level of engagement and participation. However, if you wish to delve deeper into any discussion topic, you can choose to spread the the content into multiple sessions.

Is there material aimed at parents or guardians?

Yes, each module includes shorter video clips, approximately 5 minutes in duration, specifically aimed at important adults on how they can support the youth from home (available with English subtitles in November 2023). These videos are available as a link that the school can distribute or place on a digital school platform for guardians to access. They are also well-suited for use during parent meetings to foster engagement in establishing common guidelines, such as bedtime routines or digital balance at home.

Is there research linked to the program?

The material is based on scientific research and facts, developed in collaboration with researchers from the Karolinska Institute. It has also been reviewed by psychologists, counselors, and thoroughly evaluated by students from six middle schools who have completed the program alongside their mentors and student health teams. Research conducted at the Karolinska Institute in collaboration with RISE is also ongoing to assess the program's effectiveness.
