ABOUT US

WHAT WE WANT

At On the Inside we are passionate about strengthening the well-being of children and young people through preventive and health-promoting initiatives. Our goal is to make a difference by spreading knowledge and equipping young people with the skills to navigate the invisible challenges they face.

Our vision is to make science and research accessible, understandable, and useful for everyone—whether you are a parent, educator, caregiver, or a young person seeking support. Through clear communication, evidence-based information, and practical tools, we help raise awareness and strengthen preventive efforts in society.

WHAT WE DO

We primarily target primary and secondary schools, as well as professionals working with young people in their daily lives, promoting and preventing student health efforts.

The learning tool On the Inside contributes to schools' systematic and health-promoting initiatives, focusing on mild mental health issues related to the changing lifestyle habits of young people in our increasingly digitalized society.

The method is scientifically based with the goal of equipping children for life and removing barriers to learning.

OUR HISTORY

Det syns inte began as a musical created by the nonprofit organization Arts & Hearts to highlight young people's mental health issues. The proceeds from the performance were donated to Tjejzonen. The overwhelming response from the audience inspired us to seek funding to reach a broader school audience. With support from the Swedish Inheritance Fund (Arvsfonden), we expanded the musical to include workshops on mental health and managed to perform for around 30,000 young people – including at Parkteatern in Stockholm – before the pandemic forced us to pause the performance.

Today, schools can stage the musical themselves. We offer the script and music backgrounds free of charge. More information here.

The method of combining dramatization with knowledge dissemination to engage young people proved to be successful and has been our guiding principle along the way. This method also forms the foundation for the film-based school program On the Inside.

METHOD DEVELOPMENT

On the Inside has previously been involved in a three-year development project in collaboration with Linköping Municipality, where the educational tool was used and developed together with the municipality’s secondary and upper secondary schools. The project was supported by the Swedish Inheritance Fund (Arvsfonden). The school program has been evaluated through a research study at Karolinska Institutet, and the results will be published in the spring of 2025.

On the Inside currently has nearly 10,000 users, including staff in schools and student health services, healthcare providers, social services, municipal activity responsibility (KAA), youth leaders in associations, and other representatives – in Sweden, Finland, and Åland.

In schools

The learning tool is used by school staff, healthcare professionals, and youth leaders in collaboration with students, children, and young people, either in a classroom setting, in groups, or one-on-one.

The tool's modules combine a high-quality drama series with scientifically grounded messages from experts and researchers, interspersed with interactive exercises and experiments. Each module includes material for approximately three lesson sessions, where students actively explore and apply the knowledge.

Additionally, there is targeted information for caregivers to strengthen support at home. The scientific content is based on the latest research in cognitive neuroscience, psychology, and behavioral science.

WHO WE ARE

The initiative is supported by countless talented musicians, playwrights, directors, composers, lyricists, educators, lighting designers, actors, filmmakers, editors, singers, and costume designers who have contributed over the years.

Since the project in Linköping Municipality, which was carried out with support from the Swedish Inheritance Fund (Arvsfonden), concluded, the school program is now distributed in Sweden by the non-profit company Det syns inte AB (SVB). The organization is currently operated by the staff members presented below.

The work was recognized by Karolinska Institutet, where Sissela Nutley, the scientific lead for Det syns inte, was awarded the cultural distinction in October 2024.

OUR Collaborations

We have established partnerships with regions, municipal associations, municipalities, school groups, and individual schools

Municipalities & Municipal alliances

The municipality initiates either a pilot program or a broader initiative, deploying our learning tool across multiple schools. Staff members receive onboarding and supportive guidance to ensure effective implementation and progress.

SCHOOLS

A school introduces the learning tool either by implementing it with selected student groups, or by involving all or a majority of its students and staff. Staff onboarding and student kick-off are optional.

Healthcare providers

Healthcare providers and student health services use the educational tool as early interventions in their health promotion efforts, either one-to-one or in small groups. The tool helps raising awareness and practice life skills in everyday life.
